Democracy Works Foundation has launched its Cool Politics Podcast, a non-partisan, intergenerational platform that brings together diverse voices to unpack the political, social and governance issues shaping our democracy. Through knowledge sharing, lived experiences and the exchange of different perspectives, the podcast creates space for critical reflection, mutual learning and meaningful dialogue. By connecting voices across generations and communities, the Cool Politics Podcast aims to deepen democratic understanding, encourage active citizenship and inspire conversations that make democracy work.
Episode 1 is hosted by Democracy Works Foundation’s Rhulani Ramela in conversation with social activist and civil society leader, Nkateko Chauke. This conversation upacks what freedom means to South Africa’s youth 50 years after the 1976 Soweto Uprising. We revisit the legacy of June 16, explore the meaning of freedom today, and reflect on the role of young people in shaping South Africa’s democracy. Through an intergenerational conversation, we discuss the struggles, aspirations and realities of young South Africans, asking how the courage of 1976 can inspire civic participation today.
